A brilliant nurse once described nursing as: “A profession sincerely dedicated in the service of others, Nursing is basically a calling to serve and give care to others especially in times of great need such as during sickness and old age. Once regarded as a vocation rather than a profession, Nursing involves the willingness to sacrifice in caring for others.”
That WAS Nursing, as time goes by, the Nursing profession has evolved and is now viewed on a different perspective.
Over the years nurses have transformed into beings competing and surviving in the race track of life. Today, nursing has transcended boundaries and is growing even more, abolishing the walls that confine them to giving care only. To this end, nurses around the globe continue to share ideas and conduct research as basis for discussion to identify issues, problems and responsibilities that would further expand the scope of nursing practice. The product of such discussions widens the context of nursing making it definable in so many ways.
As part of the continuing growth of nursing professionalism, many nurses choose to focus their practice in certain fields of the clinical area such as OB-GYN, Pedia, Med-Surg, ER, etc. They earnestly train and specialize in their chosen field to become fit in taking care of patients with illnesses related to such field. Aside from that, more and more nurses have furthered their knowledge to become nurse practitioners; these nurses are like doctors and they could legally diagnose, do orders, initiate treatment, and prescribe a medication. As the Nursing world is growing, so are the nurses’ knowledge thus lighted the way for them to be voted as the most trusted professionals.
The world of Nursing is getting bigger and wider and whichever way it may be defined, it would still point to a common goal—-the patient’s wellness. Moreover, let us not forget that the corner stone of the Nursing profession is reflected on its name itself. Nursing, meaning to nurse; to nurse meaning to CARE.
