Verbal Shock Absorbers (Nurse’s Role)

I don’t know if nurses in the Philippines notice this but it has already been existent in the clinical system of the country for quite some time. I’m talking about the people’s view regarding the doctor-nurse professional relationship. I’ve been a nurse for four years now and ever since I was a student nurse I’ve realized how ordinary people would judge a nurse’s role.

Most often than not, patients and their significant others think that we nurses are nothing more of a doctor’s helper, maids or worse a negligible persona in the clinical area. This harsh reality had bitten me many times like situations wherein a patient would prefer a doctor to initiate a certain NURSING procedure. I guess every nurse in the Philippines had their share of becoming verbal shock absorbers when they were still “virgins” in the wards. Patients never really had the guts to scold a doctor and the doctors on the other hand often displace their stress-related anger to the poor nurses.

You just can’t imagine how the skin of our faces have become so thick and numb as a result of absorbing all those yelling and nagging. Lol. We should be starting to abolish this “mistrust, maid and shock absorber” issues in the minds of Filipino patients. In several countries including the US, nurses are in the top 5 most trusted and respected professions year after year. How do we make that the case here?
